Silk and fine textiles have always held an importance place in the Thai royal courts. Magnificent brocaded silk costumes , heavily embellished with gold , were a sign of wealth ,power and noble birth . They enriched ceremonial occasions and served as a medium of exchange or gifts. A knowledge of costumes and their importance can be gained from mural paintings and figurines or from description by early foreign travellers. Records indicate that during the Sukhothai period ( around A.D 1250-1438) and Ayutthayan period (A.D) 1350-1767) , exotic silks. Brocades and satins were imported from China , Persia, and India to make elaborate court costumes for the nobility. Aristocratic ladies wore a court pha sin ,a simple garment one metre long , gathered and folded at the waistline and secured with a belt. This was combined with a sabai, a long pierce of plain pleated or pattern silk about 30 centimetres wide that was worn above the waist, draped across the chest, falling casually over the left shoulder. The fabric could be worn with either one or both ends tucked into the waistband , or secured by small gold chains. The sabai was often scented with perfumes made from a potpourri of flowers . fragrant limes and incense.
Foreign visitors to the court of Ayutthaya always mentioned the glittering beauty of the clothing. Simon de la Loubere , a French emissary , visited the city in 1688 and provides the follwing desction: “ They go with their Feet naked and their head bare; and for Decency only they begirt their Reigns and Thighs down to their Knees with a piece of painted cloth about two Ells and an half long, which the Portuguese do call Pagne , from the Latin word Pannus … sometimes instead of a painted cloth , the Pagne is a silken Stuff , either plain or embroider’d with a border of Gold and Silver
The pha nung, a rectangular pierce of material about one metre wide and three to four metres long, was popular amongst both men and women. It could be worn in two different styles; as a pha nungchung kraen style, the garment was tied in the front , knotted at waist, then twisted from the top edge to the bottom edge to form to tail which was field between the legs and tucked into the waist at back. It was held in place with the aid of a belt or loincloth. In the chip-na-nang style the garment was wrapped around the lower body , gathered in front with both end skillfully folded into pleats and fastened with a beltIn addition to the complications of dressing properly, Ayuthhayan law governed fashion propriety. Laws dictated that people should dress according to their social class and decreed that certain dress styles would be restricted to royalty or members of the court. Only the Queen was permitted to wear the hom-pak , an ornate heavily jewelled type of sabai. Commoners went bare chested , wearing a simple wrap-around skirt-like garment.
In the 18th century Ayuthhaya was attacked by the Burmese , and the capital finally fell in 1767. During the period of ware, women were forced to crop their hair short and disguise themselves as men so as to avoid being captured and carried away by the Burmese. Elaborate styles were abandoned for the sake of practicality. Once the new capital was established in Bangkok and conditions stabilized , woman turn their attention to fashion. The Rattankosin period (late 18th center to early 20th ) saw those styles prevalent in Ayutthaya revitalised. Through men did not wear coats o tops unless duty required woman recommand wearing the sabai . Pha sins became richer and more colourful and were embellished with ornate jewellery.
During the 19th century ,Thailand expanded contact with the West, and was influenced by European and American culture in all realms of life, includeing fashion. During the reign of King Rama III (1824-1851) ,a visiting American diplomat described the dress of royal prince: “He was dressed in a jacket of pink damasked crape,closely fitting the body , a sarong of dark silk, knotted in front , the two ends hanging down nearly to the ground , and over ot was tied a light sash ,upon which two jewelled rings of large size were strung, This costume left the head, arms and legs bare…”
King Mogkut (Rama IV,1851-1868) favoured and encouraged Western styles of dressing. The monarch and aristocratic men began to wear long-sleeved tops and pants , while high society ladies wore Western-style skirts together with blouses. When attending royal functions, in the presence o the king ,officials were required to wear jackets , and uniform were issued according to rank
King Chulalongkorn (Rama V,1868-1910),influenced by a visit to Europe at the end of the 19th century, followed in his father’s footsteps in westernisation of clothing. However , during special occasions, noblemen and officials reverted to traditional Thai costume. Men would often combine a pha nung with a western-style jacket shoes and stockings. Photographs of the King show him wearing either trousers or a pha nug, depending on the occasion. The King enjoyed travelling around the country accompanied by this consorts, whom he prefered to be attired as femininely as possible. He objected to the masculine garb popular amongst contemporary travelling women. Thus, traditional Thai dress was redesigned to please and accommodate the “modern” Thai woman. The sabai was now worn over a louse , and the pha nung was frequently won with a silk jacket trimmed with lace, or with a camisole top with bows along the straps, or a high-necked Victorian style blouse and a piece of colourful silk draped like a sash over one shoulderJ.G.D. Campbell,a foreign traveller visiting Bangkok in he late 19th century, eloquently described the clothing of the era: “The national garment of the Siamese of both sexes is called the ‘panung’ … the costliness of the material used ,cotton or silk, varies with the means of the wearer. The ‘panungs’ of the rich. Being often of beautiful silk are very and some, their very simplicity adding to the effect. They can be seen in all hues --- orange, green, blue, red, and purple in every shade --- each day of week, it is said, having its appropriate colour. “ he further wrote that the wealthy wore long silk stockings and often patent leather shoes with buckles, and that wealthy men wore a white jacket and ladies of the upper class silk or satin embroidered jackets trimmed with costly lace and jeweled button
Styles also varied geographically. For example , in the northern court of Chiang Mai which became a province of Thailand under Rama V ,women never wore the pha nung chung kraben. Instead, those of high rank wore a plain or brocade pha sin, a skirt folded in front, with an elaborately embroidered silk or cotton hem interwoven with gold or silver threadWhen King vajjravudh (Rama VI,1910-1925) announced his betrothal, He also made it know that he wished women to discard the pha nung in favour if the pha sim,which gradually gave way to European-style skirts During his reign, city women preferred the new fashions, while many country dwellers continued to wear the pha nung. However, some older ladies felt undressed without pha nung chung kaben and chose to maintain one beneath their skirts. The sabai virtually disappeared ,but the pha sin regained popularity. Mixing Eastern tradition with Western styles, the sin-yok, a cloth woven in gold or silver was frequently worn long over loose, Western-style blouses.
With the introduction of constitutinal monarchy in 1932 , the pda nung was deemed improper and was replaced by Western-style uniforms. This change reflects the extent to which traditional Thai costume has been mixed with or replaced by contemporary Western fashion.In an effect to preserve the heritage of Thai dress, Her Majesty Queen Sirikit decreed five principal styles of national costume for wear by modern Thai women. Derived from the traditional dress of earlier periods ,they are categorised according to levels of formalityThe Thai Ruanton , meaning Thai-style house , is a casual dress suitable for informal day wear. The skirt is long with vertical or horizontal strips on the hem, while the jacket has tree-quarter sleeves with a round, collarless neck. Formal daytime occasions call for The Thai Chitrlade , named after the palace which is the residence of the royal Family. This is a long-sleeved jacket with stand-up collar and a pha sim skirt with a centre pleat either plain or brocaded.
During an informal evening function, one should wear the Thai Amarin , an outfit of skirt and jacket named after the most beautiful throne room within the Grand Palace complex. This skirt material may be of silk brocade. The jacket may have either three-quarter length sleeves and a collarless neck or long sleeves with stand-up Thai collar. Formal evening occasions require the Thai Borompimarn , meaning great heavens. This is a one-piece dress created from gold or silver brocade. The skirt is pleated down the centre panel ,and the bodice has long sleeves, a high ,round neck with a stand-up collar.
The full dress costume worn for formal palace ceremonies is called the Thai Chakri, meaning palace or dynasty. This is a two-piece outfit, with a skirt of heavy gold or silver brocade and a pleated centre panel held together by a silver or gold belt. The top or sabi may be attached to the skirt or worn separately covering one shoulder.

Archaeological discoveries in the village of Ban Chiang in the northeast province of Udon Thani have led experts to believe that Thailand’s sericulture history may be as old as China’s. An extensive burial site yielded evidence of a complex civilization dating back over 4,000 years. Ban Chiang people cultivated crops and produced ornaments and bronze tools. Excavations also revealed a cluster of unwoven and undyed silk thread. Similar silk thread remnants were found in the pre-historic area of Ban Nadi in nong Han,Udon Thani. Both discoveries history strongly suggest that sericulture existed amongst Thailand’s prehistoric civilizations.Between the fifth and seventh centuries , The importance of Silk Road began to decline as sea routes were discovered that proved less hazardous, promoting trade between China ,Southeast Asia India and the West. Early trade along the silk sea route passed through Southeast Asia where Chinese silk and porcelains were highly desirable commodities Archaeological evidence suggest that sea traders had reached the early Mon settlers of Dvaravati Kingdom in Siam who controlled settlements along the river plains an the Gulf of Siam. It is highly probable that silk would have been one of the items traded



King Ramkhamhaeng of Sukhothai, Thailand’s first kingdom, founded around A.D 1250, Established political relations by sending a mission to China in 1292. Other missions flowed and returned to Sukothai bearing gift for King that include a gold-filigreed dress and silk fabric. They also brought Chinese artisans to improve the production of pottery wares These artisans may have brought sericulture skills with them In 1296 ,Cho Ta-kuan, a Chinese envoy, was assigned to a post in Cambodia and spent much of his time in the great city of Angkor. He noted in his journal that ,through the Cambodians were not involved in the cultivation of silk ,Thai settlers were growing mulberry trees ,raising silkworms and producing silk cloth. Cho further explains that Cambodian women were entirely ignorant of sewing, dress-making and mending, and that the dark damask silks worn by Cambodians were produced and mended by Thai weavers. This record along with archaeological evidence indicates that sericulture was an established craft sukhothai people. Silk became an item of great value that was used for trade with neighbouring kingdoms such as China and Cambodia



Sukhothai stone inscriptions record that after the harvest ,men made iron implement and women wove cloth the inscriptions also describe a five-coloured cloth believed to be silk, used for ceremonial occasions. In the early northern kingdoms collectively known as Lanna Thai which evolved at the same time as the Sukhothai kingdom, silk appeared in the royal courts the northern city of Chiang Mai and surrounding villages have temple paintings the depict costumes which appear to be made of silk

The 16th and 17th centuries saw Europeans voyaging throughout Asia and visiting Siam. By the time , Silk cloth was firmly established as a valuable trade item ,and it was bartered alongside other Thai goods including ivory ,leather ,acacia ,sapan wood, ceramics and pepper. Siam and neighbouring courts of Burma,Laos and Cambodia were renowned for their sumptuous brocades that dazzled the eye with glittering gold and silver yarns. Many silk were woven in India base on Thai designs and imported into Siam. Other Silk were Japanese, Persian and Chinese. Record from the court of Ayutthaya ,the capital of Siam from 1350 to 1767 ,explain the techniques of raising silk worms and Describe the abundance of the luxurious fabric , used not only for fine clothing but also wall hanging ,dividers and floor spreads. The leader of French embassy was delighted by silk sarongs of “an extraordinary beauty …. permitted to those only to whom the Prince present them.”

It is record that in 1608 King Ekatotsarot of Ayutthaya sent a Thai emissary to the Netherlands bearing valuable gifts for the Stadholder ,including silk fabric. Historical records mention that Persian ikat (Mudmee) worn by a Thai ambassador to the French court in 1685, was so admired that it inspired ikat style weaving and design at the great silk center of Lyon. Gifts to Louis XIV (1643-1715) from King Narai the great included costly silks. Unfortunately ,when the Burmese destroyed Ayutthaya in 1767, many record and historical details were lost foreverWhen Bangkok become the capital city in 1782, many Ayutthayan customs were reinstated.For example, certain Thai silk designs indicated the rank and status of court officials. This distinction based on weave designs was practiced until the early 20th century. Sir john Bowring, a British consul based in Bangkok during the reign of king Mongkut (Rama IV) noted that costly garments worm by persons of high rank were woven in their own houses ,proving that they could produce high quality silk. In 1857,King Mongkut showed Europeans that the quality of Thai silk matched that of fabrics from the British Empire ,By sending Queen Victoria magnificent gifts including elaborate brocades ,a red silk cloth and gold sarong

Cotton was woven in the village for everyday purpose ,but special occasions such as ordination , wedding and festival required the use of silk garment . Despite the intricate role Thai silk played in high society ,a flood of importance fabrics including fabulous silk from China , Persia and Japan made it difficult for the local silks to compete. Thai sericulture remain a small cottage industry ,most active in northeast region around Khorat until mid-20th centuryIn 1901,King Chulalongkorn made an attempt to upgrade the local silk industry by inviting a team of Japanese experts to aid production. In 1903 ,the Department of Silk Craftsmen was established under the directorship of Prince Phephatanaphong. These early steps marked the beginning of rapid sericulture development in Thailand. Mulberry tree were planted in the northeast ,local silkworms were cross bred with the Japanese variety, modern spinning and hand reeling machines were introduced and traditional looms were replaced by more advance ones. Sericulture courses were taught throughout the kingdom. By 1910,over 35 tons of silk were begin export annually

history of silk

The history of silk begins, according to Chinese myths, in the 27th century BC. But recent excavations have found the oldest evidences of silk production in Korea between 41st~44th century B.C. The art of silk making slowly spread to other civilizations via merchants, looters, and spies. Having arrived in Europe at the end of the Middle Ages, the production of silk climaxed during the phase of industrialization at the beginning of the nineteenth century. After that, silk production experienced a rapid decline due to improvements in manufacturing in certain Asian countries and to epidemics that affected the silk worms in France.


Myths and legends

The writings of Confucius and Chinese tradition recount that in the 27th century BC a silk worm's cocoon fell into the tea cup of the empress Leizu.[1] Wanting to extract it from her drink, the young girl of fourteen began to unroll the thread of the cocoon. She then had the idea to weave it. Having observed the life of the silk worm on the recommendation of her husband, the Yellow Emperor, she began to instruct her entourage the art of raising silk worms, sericulture. From this point on, the girl became the goddess of silk in Chinese mythology. Silk would eventually leave China in the hair of a princess promised to a prince of Khotan. The princess, refusing to go without the fabric she loved, would finally break the imperial ban on silk worm exportation.
Silk was a mystery for such a long time that civilizations who discovered it, thanks primarily to the Silk Road that crossed Eurasia, invented numerous legends on the subject. Persian legends state that the first silk worm couple was born on the body of Job, and subsequently attacked by vermin.[citation needed]
Though silk was exported to foreign countries in great amounts, sericulture remained a secret that the Chinese guarded carefully. Consequently, other peoples invented wildly varying accounts of the source of the incredible fabric. In classical antiquity most Romans, great admirers of the cloth, were convinced that the Chinese took the fabric from tree leaves.[2] This belief was affirmed by Seneca the Younger in his Hippolytus and by Virgil in his Georgics. Notably, Pliny the Elder knew better. Speaking of the bombyx or silk moth, he wrote in his Natural Histories "They weave webs, like spiders, that become a luxurious clothing material for women, called silk."


The appearance of silk

It is not possible to precisely date when silk first appeared. Fragments have been recovered from royal tombs in the Shang Dynasty (ca. 1600 BC - ca. 1046 BC),[4] but daily usage only seemed to have taken off beginning in the Han Dynasty, during 2nd century BC.
Recently even older evidence of human knowledge of silkworms have been found in Korea. The first chinese written characters related to silk production appeared in oracle texts no older than 3500B.C. These are: 糸(Silk or Cloth) 帛(Silk) 巾(Cloth) 桑(white mulberry tree, which its leaves are the only food for silkworms) 虫(bug, but in ancient chinese, may specifically refer to silkworms) However, Secondary Digsite of Jitap-ri, Bongsan County, HwanghaeDo Province, North Korea has unearthed Earthware with carved pictures of silkworms with 10 segments, unseen in usual chinese silkworms. Another artifact in MagaJeomJin of the Ablok River in North Korea consisted of several small clay figures of silkworms with 10 segments and 10 legs each sizing 2.6cm long and 0.4cm in diameter. Carbon dating has found these to date 6055~6325 years ago, around 41st~44th century B.C. The 10 segmented silkworms are known as 高麗三眠蠶 or 韓三眠蠶(Korean 3 Sleeping Silkworm, in reference to how many times the silkworm sheds itself before becoming a pupa) and are silkworms indigenous and exclusive to Korea. They have 28 chromosomes compared to 27 of the common chinese worm. [5]
During this epoch, the Chinese had already lost their secret as the Koreans, the Japanese, and later the Indians succeeded in discovering how to make silk. Allusions to the fabric in the Old Testament show that it was known in western Asia in biblical times.[6] Scholars believe that since the 2nd century BC the Chinese established a commercial network aimed at exporting silk to the West.[6] Silk was used, for example, by the Persian court and its king, Darius III, when Alexander the Great conquered the empire.[6] Even though silk rapidly spread across Eurasia, its production remained for three millennia exclusively Chinese (with the exception of Japan).

How can I be sure?

The four basic methods for determining true silk are by :
1) considering the price; looking carefully at the
2) weave and
3) luster; and
4) by burning a piece!

1) Pure real silk costs 6-10 times as much as imitation silk made from polyester.
2) Our 100 percent pure Thai silk weave is completely homespun and hand made. The filament is a natural fiber with clearly visible small flaws and joins in the thread along the warp and the weft. Imitation silk made from polyester is a machine-made fabric and has a perfect surface with no flaws or bumps.
3) Luster also shows whether a fabric is real or imitation. Our pure Thai silk is usually made with one color for the warp and another color for the weft. This produces the sheen and luster of our silk and creates the unique two tones and blends which change depending on the angle of light. Imitation polyester silk shines white regardless of the angle of the light.
4) If you burn Thai silk (a thread or two is enough) with a flame, it leaves fine ash and smells like burning hair. When you take the flame away it stops burning. If you burn imitation polyester silk with a flame, it drips, burns with a black smoke, and continues to burn after the flame is taken away . The three different sizes of digital images for each silk swatch on the World of Thai Silk web site make it easy for you to see the unique qualities of real Thai silk so you probably won't need to resort to the burn test.



best way to care for Thai silk?

Dry cleaning seems to be the best way to keep Thai silk in good condition and maintain its original beauty, luster, and texture. However, I've seen claims that this will have a bad effect on the silk in the longterm. You can also hand wash it in lukewarm water using the mildest soap and I've seen experts extol the virtues of LuxFlakes and Woolite. Adding a tablespoonful of clear white vinegar to the final rinse is supposed to be a good tip.
Never boil, bleach, wring, crumple or soak your Thai silk for a long period!
After washing it, roll it up in an absorbent towel or other cloth to absorb most of the water -- but not tightly! Immediately remove it from the fabric roll and dry it in the shade, preferably where there's a mild breeze, and be sure it's well supported. If water drips from the silk then it's too wet.
Iron Thai silk on the inside of the garment while it is still slightly damp. Some persons recommend using only a cool iron with the intent of pressing out wrinkles and not heating the fabric. If the silk is already dry and you are using a warm iron, apply a damp cloth on the outside of your silk fabric and iron through the cloth. Properly cared for Thai silk can easily last a century and be passed on to your children and grandchildren.
NEWS FLASH 15 June 2006: Yesterday, while visiting one of our most respected and prolific weaving mills who have been in the silk trade for 2-3 generations, I saw them merrily using a steam iron on their latest line of Thai silk scarves and shawls — with nothing but good effects! So take all commandments about “proper care for Thai silk” with a grain of salt.
We strongly recommend you have your custom woven Thai silk treated with our secret Thai method before we ship it to you! Our standard policy is to treat ALL our silk fabric unless you specifically request that we do NOT. For some Thai silk fabric uses, treatment may not be best. But standard policy for wholesale value-added silk products such as scarves is NO treatment unless you request it.
We find that the recommendations of Ohio State University (Norma Pitts & Judith Wessel) regarding the care of silk fabric make a lot of sense.

What is Thai silk?

What is Thai silk?

Silk is the natural filament produced by the salivary glands of silkworms which are a type of moth that feeds on the mulberry bush. Silkworms are caterpillars, not worms. They spin their cocoons using a complex set of mechanisms within their bodies when they change from larva into pupa. Thai silk is produced by Thai caterpillars raised on Thai mulberry leaves by Thai weavers in Thailand, primarily on the Korat Plateau in the country's northeast region. Chaiyaphum is just north of Korat province.
Raw silk is bumpy and irregular. The completed cocoon is pulled from the mulberry bush and placed in a vat of boiling water, which separates the silk thread of the cocoon from the caterpillar inside.
The silk from Thailand's caterpillars varies in color from light gold to very light green. A cocoon is comprised of one thread that is 500-1,500 meters long. A single filament is too thin to use alone so many threads are combined to make a thicker, more practical fiber.
Our weavers wash these raw silk threads, bleach them, then soak them in vats of hot dyes. Afterwards, they wash the silk thread again, stretch it, and put it through a final dying process. When that is finished, they wind the threads onto spools or drums in preparation for weaving using traditional hand operated looms.


What's the difference between machine woven and hand woven Thai silk?

Every piece of hand woven Thai silk is a timeless, unique work of textile art from the hands of a rural Thai woman. Since it is art work produced by a human, it forever carries an imprint of the character, thoughts, emotions, feelings, spirit and life of the weaver. It's imperfection is the heart of its beauty and the proof of its human creator. Machine woven silk is a wider, monotonously “perfect” industrial fabric that can be produced to ISO standards and is more suitable than hand-woven silk for some purposes. What's the difference between Thai silk and that of of other countries?

Thai silk is usually soft but has a relatively coarse texture with uneven, slightly knotty threads. This quality makes it extremely suitable for weaving by hand. Thai silk has a magnificent, rich, exotic beauty and, with proper care, can last a century or more.
Chinese silk tends to be smooth and satiny. Indian silk tends to be softer but more crinkly and uses richer colors. Italian silk tends to strive for a refined and elegant look but this can easily be accomplished anywhere using mechanized weaving.

Why is Thai silk so shiny and lustrous?

Thai Silk has triangular fibers which reflect light like prisms. It also has layers of protein that gives it a natural sheen and makes it lustrous and smooth. Silk is an insect fiber and superior to any animal or plant fiber. Thai silk fiber is strong but lightweight, elastic but supple.


What is smooth Thai silk?

Smooth Thai silk has a shiny, satin-like finish. It's suitable for all purposes, particularly clothing and interior decorating. The “standard” width was formerly about 37 inches/94 centimeters and is available in 2-ply and sometimes 4-ply. Starting in 2003, our Thai weavers began producing silk at a standard width of 40 inches. (Click here for sample!)

What is rough Thai silk?

"Rough" Thai silk is beautiful and textured but not really coarse or rough. It is soft. It's also sometimes called “nubby” Thai silk but as of mid-2006 we begain calling all these weaves Thai dupioni. It's highly suitable for silk drapes and silk curtains -- and silk upholstery fabric if cotton backing is affixed. It's also great for other interior design applications but it's a fantastic fashion fabric currently popular with designers of luxury apparel & bridal gowns! The standard width used to be about 37 inches (94 cm) but starting in 2003, our weavers began producing silk at a standard width of 40 inches. Two-ply dupioni Thai silk is extremely appropriate for scarves. Four-ply dupioni is more commonly woven and excellent for silk drapes and silk curtains. All colors and designs are available. What is two-tone Thai silk?

Two tone iridescent Thai silk is way cool and extremely pleasant to the eyes. Depending on the angle at which it is viewed, the fabric color changes! We produce this iridescent effect by using two different colors when we weave the cloth. Our 550% enlargements of actual fabric used for our page backgrounds clearly shows the contrasting colors of the warp (vertical thread) and weft (horizontal thread). You can choose the the colors of the weft and warp to produce your own unique two-tone Thai silk. (Click here for sample!)

What is striped Thai silk?

When we talk about “striped” we do not mean “stripes" produced by color variations as as in a normal material design (although this is also possible). This is a weaving technique. We produce striped Thai silk by alternating between smooth Thai silk and rough Thai silk during weaving to produce a physical pattern in the material. This can be used in conjunction with a color pattern as well. Many patterns are available and “striped Thai silk” may not actually result in “stripes” at all. An infinite variety of designs are possible and you can commission your own. We are flexible and can weave your own designs. It's very suitable for home decoration, curtains, furniture coverings, interior design applications, wall coverings, and even clothing! (Click here for sample!)


How Thai Silk is Made?

All our silk is made in Thailand using a rather complicated process. Although there are now many enormous, automated factories making silk fabric all over the world, all the material sold by World of Thai Silk is created by individual, independent, women weavers at their homes in Northeast Thailand using traditional methods and their own looms. This is why widths of the cloth varies and each bolt of cloth is a unique work of art.
The process begins by raising silkworms on mulberry leaves. When they are mature, the silkworms spin silk cocoons. The cocoons are then degummed by the weavers using special chemicals.
They boil the degummed silk with various natural or chemical dyes at 90 degrees Celsius, constantly stirring the silk to get uniform color. The dyed silk thread is then dried.
The dried and dyed silk is then spun into yarn on wooden or plastic tubes. The women use this yarn to spin the fabulous Thai silk fabric we sell.

How to Care for Silk?Dry cleaning is the best way to keep Thai silk in good condition and maintain its original beauty, luster, and texture. You can also hand wash it in lukewarm water using the mildest soap. Add a table spoonful of clear white vinegar added to the final rinse.
Never wring your Thai silk! Dry it in the shade, preferably where there's a mild breeze, and be sure it's well supported.
Iron Thai silk on the inside of the garment while it is still slightly damp. If already dry, apply a damp cloth on the outside and iron through the cloth. Properly cared for Thai silk can easily last a century and be passed on to your children and grandchildren. For more info see this page.


How can I recognize 100% pure silk and imitation silk made from polyester?

How can I test silk?The four basic methods for determining true silk are by 1) considering the price; looking carefully at the 2) weave and 3) luster; and 4) by burning a piece!
1) Pure real silk costs 6-10 times as much as imitation silk made from polyester.
2) Our real pure Thai silk weave is completely hand made and the filament is a natural fiber with clearly visible small flaws and joins in the thread along the warp and the weft. Imitation silk made from polyester is a machine-made fabric and has a perfect surface with no flaws or bumps.
3) Luster also shows whether a fabric is real or imitation. Our pure Thai silk is made with one color for the warp and another color for the weft. This produces the sheen and luster of our silk and creates the unique two tones and blends which change depending on the angle of light. Imitation polyester silk shines white regardless of the angle of the light.
4) If you burn Thai silk (a thread or two is enough) with a flame, it leaves fine ash and smells like burning hair. When you take the flame away it stops burning. If you burn imitation polyester silk with a flame, it drips, burns with a black smoke, and continues to burn after the flame is taken away . Who discovered silk?

History of Thai Silk.Empress Si Ling Chi of China is credited with discovering silk. While sitting under a mulberry tree in a palace garden having tea, a silkworm's cocoon reportedly fell out of the tree into her cup. While removing it from her tea, she discovered the fine silk filament of the cocoon beginning to unravel.
The Chinese guarded the secret of silk for millenniums by putting to death anyone found guilty of smuggling silkworm eggs, cocoons, or mulberry seeds. Silk became the cloth of emperors and royalty and a great source of wealth. However, about 1900 years ago a Chinese princess who married an Indian prince is reported to have succesfully smuggled silkworm eggs out of China in her headdress and then fed them with the leaves of Indian mulberry trees.
Since then, silk production has spread to other Asian countries and archaeologist have found silk 3,000 years old in the ruins of Baan Chiang, Thailand, which many of them consider the earliest civilization in Southeast Asia. Thais have developed a type of silk that is considered one of the finest fabrics in the world. They use a unique manufacturing process and have unique patterns and colors.


What is hand woven ikat silk fabric (mudmee)?

Hand woven Mudmee Thai silk (also know as “ikat") comes from the northeast of Thailand which is called “Isan” and comprised of 17 provinces and situated on the Khorat plateau. The Mekong River borders the whole region on its eastern and northern frontiers with Laos. Its western and southern frontiers are mountain ranges that form the rim of the plateau.
The intricate traditional geometric and zoomorphic motifs of mudmee Thai silk have been handed down for centuries. The designs and patterns in mudmee are created primarily by using various colors in the weft (left to right threads) of the fabric. The people who migrated into the central and Mekhong River Basin area of northeast Thailand from Pakse and Savankhet Laos brought their weaving skills with them. In the 19th century, Thailand's King Rama V introduced advanced technology which created the foundation of the country's large silk industry.
Mudmee fabric is usually half a solid or two-tone color and the other half the mudmee pattern.
Thailand's northeast was not always the arid area that it is today. As recently as 1960, forests were lush and abundant and natural resources for dyes were plentiful. Jim Thomson introduced the permanent chemical dyes that are now so common.
Traditionally, everyday dress was practical and usually quite plain. However, a great deal of time and expense was spent to weave the fabric for weddings, temple ceremonies, funerals, meeting high ranking officials, and spirit appeasing ceremonies, resulting in spectacular quality as well as complex techniques and designs.

What is dupion silk?

Dupion is an interesting textured Thai silk fabric made using a mixture of silk from both long, smooth, white cocoons and short, rough, yellow cocoons. Many other terms are used to refer to this silk fabric and more detailed information is found on our page “Dupioni Thai Silk Fabric”.


What is the difference between white and yellow cocoons?

White cocoons are smooth, white and about 60-100 meters long. A yellow cocoon is short, rough, yellow and about 20-30 meters long. However, every cocoon of both types also has three parts which vary in quality and character. The silk threads of the outer part are large, short and more textured filaments. In the next part of the cocoon, the filaments are smoother and longer than the first type but not as fine or expensive as the third type which is best.


Is the "Silk Road" or "Silk Route" in Thailand?

German academic Ferdinand von Richthofen is credited with inventing the term "Silk Road" or "Silk Route" which was actually neither a road nor a route but rather a trade network. It started in China and stretched across South Asia to Middle East Asia and the eastern Mediterranean Sea. It probably bypassed Thailand. Few merchants or travellers went from one end of the complex network of passages and routes to the other. Silk, spices and other low-weight, low-volume, high-value luxury items were traded in relay-fashion along the Silk Road from one trader to the next.
